In cases of extreme obesity, sometimes the most powerful procedure is needed – BPD/DS achieves the highest weight loss.

A demanding procedure that combines sleeve gastrectomy with extensive small intestine rerouting. For patients where other procedures are not sufficient.

The Procedure

Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch

The most complex bariatric procedure. Combines sleeve gastrectomy with extensive rerouting of the small intestine. Strongest malabsorptive component. Highest weight loss.

Why this procedure

Benefits of BPD/DS

01
Highest weight loss
BPD/DS achieves the highest weight loss of all bariatric procedures – up to 80% of excess weight.
02
Strong metabolic component
The extensive small intestine rerouting produces a significant improvement in metabolic diseases, particularly diabetes.
03
For the highest BMI classes
Specifically developed for patients with extreme obesity (BMI over 55-60), where other procedures are not sufficient.

Results

What BPD/DS achieves

Weight loss up to 80%

The highest achievable weight loss of all bariatric procedures – sustained and stable long-term.

Diabetes remission over 90%

Excellent long-term results for type 2 diabetes with remission rates exceeding 90%.

Especially for BMI over 60

BPD/DS is the procedure of choice for the most severe obesity, when other procedures do not achieve the desired results.

Eligibility

Who is this procedure suitable for?

  • BMI over 50-60
  • Most severe obesity (BMI over 60)
  • Failed previous surgeries
  • Severe metabolic diseases
“BPD/DS is the most effective procedure for extreme obesity. The decision to proceed is always made on a highly individual basis.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Well informed for your consultation

What is BPD/DS?

BPD/DS stands for Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch. It is the most complex bariatric procedure and combines a sleeve gastrectomy with an extensive rerouting of the small intestine. The strong malabsorptive component leads to the highest weight loss of all procedures.

How does BPD/DS differ from other procedures?

Unlike the gastric bypass or SADI-S, BPD/DS has the most extensive intestinal rerouting and thus the strongest malabsorptive effect. By preserving the pylorus (gastric valve), the risk of dumping syndrome is lower. However, follow-up care is more intensive.

What follow-up care is required?

BPD/DS requires consistent lifelong supplementation with vitamins, minerals, and protein. Regular blood tests are essential to detect deficiencies early. Follow-up care is more intensive than with other bariatric procedures.
