ENDOCRINE SURGERY
Focused Parathyroidectomy
An elevated calcium level can explain many symptoms – the targeted removal of the overactive parathyroid gland often brings rapid relief.
A short, minimally invasive procedure with intraoperative rapid diagnostics that directly addresses the cause.
The Procedure
Targeted removal of overactive parathyroid glands. Most common indication: primary hyperparathyroidism with elevated calcium levels. Minimally invasive with intraoperative frozen section analysis.
Why This Procedure
Outcomes
Focused parathyroidectomy offers a cure rate of over 95% for primary hyperparathyroidism.
Confirmation of surgical success during the procedure through intraoperative PTH rapid testing.
Focused technique – only the diseased gland is removed, the healthy parathyroid glands are preserved.
Eligibility
Parathyroid surgery is indicated for patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (elevated calcium, kidney stones, gallstones, osteoporosis caused by parathyroid hyperfunction).
“Focused parathyroidectomy is a precise procedure with an immediate effect on calcium levels.”Univ.-Prof. Dr. Gerhard Prager
Frequently Asked Questions
The four parathyroid glands regulate calcium metabolism. They produce parathyroid hormone (PTH), which controls the calcium level in the blood. In the case of hyperfunction, too much calcium is released, which can lead to kidney stones, bone loss, and fatigue.
Through blood tests (elevated calcium and parathyroid hormone) and imaging procedures such as ultrasound and sestamibi scintigraphy to precisely localize the overactive gland.
A focused parathyroidectomy typically takes 45 to 90 minutes. The hospital stay is 1-2 days, and recovery is usually complete after one week.
